Sonoma Valley is making a name for itself outside of simply being in close proximity to Napa, and in fact is where California’s wine industry actually began in 1857 at Buena Vista Winery. Founded by Agoston Haraszthy and touted as California’s first ‘premium’ winery, it’s currently owned by Jean-Charles Boisset and his wife Gina Gallo, two of the leading winemakers in the industry.
Sonoma is also home to California’s dairy industry, with notable producers like Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co., Vella Cheese Company, and Bohemian Creamery based in this area. Cattle and horse ranches abound, and the wide expanses of rolling hills and open space can be a refreshing alternative to the manicured, vineyard after vineyard experience of Napa.
